Sifu Mobile Beginner Combat Tips: 7 Things That Actually Matter

Sifu won a Steam Award for "Best Game You Suck At." That's not marketing — it's a warning. The game is hard on purpose, and the mobile version doesn't sand down the edges. Here's what actually matters when you're starting out, learned the painful way so you don't have to.

1. Parry, don't just dodge

New players dodge everything. Dodging works, but parrying is the core skill — a well-timed parry builds up an enemy's structure meter, and a full structure bar means a free takedown. Practice parry timing on the weakest enemies in level one until it feels automatic. Everything else in the game gets easier once this clicks.

2. Structure is the real health bar

Enemies don't just have health — they have structure. Blocking raises your own structure; getting hit while blocking raises it faster. When your structure maxes out, you're staggered and open to huge damage. So don't turtle behind block. Parry to build their structure, dodge to reset yours, and take the takedown the moment it's offered.

3. Fight dirty

The environment is a weapon. Throw bottles, swing bats and pipes, kick enemies into walls and off ledges, vault over counters to reposition. A weapon multiplies your damage and your options — always pick one up when you see it. Sifu rewards creativity more than button-mashing.

4. Don't fear death (early)

The aging mechanic means dying costs you years, not progress. Early on, treat deaths as tuition: every run teaches you enemy patterns, and knowledge is the actual progression system. That said, dying at age 70 ends the run — so once you can clear a level cleanly at a young age, replay it before moving on. Entering a boss fight at 25 instead of 60 is the difference between winning and suffering.

5. Unlock skills in the right order

Permanent skill unlocks carry across runs and they're the closest thing to leveling up. Prioritize defensive and utility skills first — things that improve your parry window or give you breathing room — before flashy combos. A bigger toolkit means nothing if you can't survive long enough to use it.

6. Learn one enemy at a time

Every enemy type has a tell and a rhythm. The big guys telegraph heavy attacks; the fast ones punish panic-dodging. When a new enemy type shows up, stop attacking for ten seconds and just watch. Learn the pattern, then punish it. This is slower than charging in, and it works ten times better.

7. Use the difficulty options without shame

The mobile version includes all the post-launch updates, which means Student (easier) difficulty is available. There's no prize for suffering. Learn the game on Student, then crank it up when you're ready. The game is still Sifu.

One more thing: if you're on touch controls, read our controls guide first — half of "this game is too hard" on mobile is actually "my buttons are in the wrong place." And if you haven't bought it yet, here's the official Play Store listing.
